High Island Side: Construction Fence/Gate/Barrier GONE!

The construction barrier/fence/gate are gone, at the High Island end! Storm erosion did create one bad spot, near the Highway 124 entrance, where the water reaches a muddy area at all but the lowest tide, making it necessary to be very careful, if one does not have 4WD, but, otherwise, the beach is gloriously drive-able!

A clothed couple was set-up about one mile from the highway entrance. I went half a mile past them, parked, and stripped to my “freedom suit.” I could see one vehicle much farther along, eastward, probably close to a mile away. I went for a very gloriously free walk/run, eastward, then turned around and went back to my vehicle. Before I reached my vehicle, a pickup approached from the High Island end, so, I donned my thong, for a moment, until he was well past me. All too soon, it was time to head back to a commitment in Houston. I did quickly drive toward the folks who were farther east of me, and had a nice, but short conversation. They had covered themselves with towels, as i approached, but let me know that they, too, were enjoying being in their freedom suits.

This was just a reconnaissance mission; no time for extending socializing.

once you get off at 124 you need to go at least 3 miles before getting nude. because that where Galveston county line ends. and have been told both still illegal but Galveston the fine is double if not triple i may hit it tomorrow just to go see. not sure i will have time to get nude but will be riding my bike in my G string

Sadly, the improved access will probably result in increased enforcement. The remoteness and difficult access have, historically, been reasons that the tradition of this being a nude beach has endured. (I have been visiting the area since about 1980.) Now that just about any 2WD vehicle can easily drive the full length of the beach, I expect that freedom to feel the breeze, all over, will become, well, not so free. In a way, that construction barrier, at the High Island end, had become my friend, in a way, making it easier to look for approaching families, and other who might be offended. I had a decent success rate, in the recent past, of setting-up nearer the barrier than anyone else, by generally showing up rather late in the day, on a weekday or Sunday.

A visit that did not include an opportunity to feel the breeze, all over, has never been wasted. I have been interested in birds and wildlife for longer than I have been visiting this area. High Island, and nearby Anahuac NWR, plus the Trinity Delta region, is a collective birding mecca. Yesterday, I saw an unusually lighter-colored Crested Caracara. That, alone, was worth the price of the tank of fuel.

Yesterday, I had simple distance, and the openness of the terrain, in my favor.

i know my girlfriend and i use to go back in the late 70's early 80's also. as soon as you hit the beach there were nude couples. for about 2 miles then you would have a small gap and then you would have the gays never had any trouble with the law or people. just people having fun. then had another gap then you had the lesbians and i carried my GF down there to look and had one girl want to beat my ass. but other than that one time we always had fun. sometimes we would just get nude and relax and sometimes we would play with others never had any trouble. and once i admitted to myself i was bi we really started having fun out there. then one year a lawyer went out there with his family knowing it was a nude beach then got it shut down.
i had plans of going out there today but then i forgot i had to deal with 2 doctors today GRRR plus it was cold and i want to bring my motorcycle or scooter not my gas hog of a truck.

I just might make it out there, today. [EDITED to add: No, not today! Noon-ish errand became a total time suck.] Low tide will not be until 3:22 PM, which might make access at the High Island end a bit tricky before that time, so, depending upon when I reach the general area, I might enter from the Sea Rim end, and then later depart through High Island. Whether or not I make it will depend upon how quickly I can clear my plate of today’s late-morning/noon-ish commitments.

The beach is open, was there today. However, the biting flies and gnats were terrible during the morning and early afternoon. Mid-afternoon, it was very nice.

i plan on hitting the beach at high island side tomorrow about noon on my bike. well scooter but it does only have 2 wheels. the looser the sand the closer to the water i will be riding.
