This post will a bit wordy. The place you enter at the HWY 87 turn is still in place. But now, it us a narrow single lane. Two cars cannot pass each other at the same time, road condition is lumpy and bumpy. Somebody has to give way to pass. That stretch of road is maybe 2/10 of a mile long. Then, the county opened it up to two lanes and has it graded right to the locked gate at the ranchers access road. Access to the beach was very easy. Tide was pretty low today so there was plenty of room. Then you get into a patch of real loose sand. Glad I have 4 wheel drive. I would guess it was 500-600 ft long. A couple of good high tides and some traffic will smooth it out eventually. If you don't have 4wd, you might get around it by getting real close to the water. I really don't think at this time a 2wd vehicle could get through that sand. Maybe at really good low tide. The furrows are deep and there is no firmness to the sand at all.
I drove in about 4 miles and the beach condition for the most part was really good. There are a few spots that are real soft, but they are easily avoided. If there is a real high tide, like a full moon tide, you would only have a single lane that parallels the electric fence. And, it might be tough to get to it without going on the old dirt road up close to the fence. Problem with that is, you are "officially" on the wrong side of the white "Conservation Boundary" signs. And then it is a crap shoot if enforcement is down there. All in all, a good drive. There were a few folks down there but all were keeping to themselves.
Good luck

Always a good idea to pack a shovel and tow strap should someone get stuck.

Always a good idea to pack a shovel and tow strap should someone get stuck. I always have that with me. I think the survey crews have to do with the eventual rehabilitation of that turn at Hwy 87. It always floods in bad weather and the concrete lane dividers they put at the ocean are all beat up. Also much further down the beach, you might notice a dredge off shore. I understand they will be dredging in more sand toward from about the halfway point North toward the state park.

Absolutely.....our 4WD Blazer, makes it just fine. Its gonna be really busy out there over the holiday. Heads up to keep it legal or, if seen, the fine is $300.00, an expensive day trip..... We don't go on holidays or weekends. Much more pleasant during the week and the ferry traffic is bearable.
