Went to the nude beach around the beginning of May 2015. When I went, I was able to go about 3 miles in from the entrance to the beach at High Island before being blocked by a tree that ran from the water line all the way to the dunes. I got there at low tide (mostly) and getting to the nude area is difficult. I have a chevy colorado truck but it's not 4wd. Coming from the entrance to the beach, you can go about 1 mile in on a semi-maintained road that runs along where the original highway used to be (you can see the old asphalt in parts). After that, you come to a gate. Sometimes it's open, sometimes it's closed. If it's open, it leads to a dirt road which runs on the land side of the vegetation line and goes down roughly another 5ish miles. This road is part of the Wildlife Refuge and is patrolled from time to time. They do not take kindly to your being on that road, although I just got a warning on a previous trip.
Your other choice is to make your way down to the beach and drive along the shore. At low tide, this is feasible if you can find a spot to get down from the high road to the beach. At high tide, the water is all the way to the dunes at parts, making driving hair raising to say the least. But anyways, I got there at low tide and drove along the beach until being blocked by the tree. I saw two other couples there, one was nude and the other was clothed. It may be possible to get around the tree if the tide is at the lowest, or if you have 4wd. I wasn't going to risk getting stuck. (or if you go on the wildlife refuge improved road). That day I was there I did not see any game wardens, but I have seen them occasionally on previous trips.
The beach itself, once you get past the gate, widens at low tide to around 20-30 feet. There are spots where there are sections of mud that you have to watch for, but for the most part it is pretty well packed sand.
